These were used on most boats from 1988 to 1996.
Supplying drive for the bar-graph ammeter, feeds for the voltmeter and the feed to supply the link relay. Since 1997 you will find them in a modified form, on most Sealine boats driving the analogue ammeter, see the Kdd electronic shunts section for details.
The first bar-drivers were for the 365 and 328, and used a resistive shunt built into the unit. They only gave an indication of battery charger amps.
These were followed by the Mk3 bar-driver, which was the first unit to use a Hall effect shunt. The main power cable from the battery passes through a loop mounted in the bar-driver module. Inside the loop is a sensor that measures magnetic fields. Any current passing through a cable generates a magnet field around the cable, the field varying with the direction of current flow. This field and direction is picked up by the sensor, and converted by an electronic circuit to control the bar-driver display. The other feature of this type of shunt is that it cannot be overloaded, thus allowing it to monitor engine starting with out system damage. Thus allowing a net load on the battery to be indicated.
The same unit also had a feed from each battery and common negative. This provides a feed back through the input connector to feed the link start relay, and via the bar-driver connector to power the digital voltmeter.
The next unit to appear had the sensor body built into the unit, and featured an M8 or M10 through bolt for the main power cable. Output this time was a voltage that varied about a nominal 5.0 volt, this was feed up to the display where it was converted to drive the 30 or 60 dot bar-graph. The first units had 2 off 6 way connectors with 4 or 5 pins in each, later units had 1 off 12 way connector. Shunts were supplied as 30 amp and 60 amp, this varied by boat. Check the bar-graph display for the rating you require.
Replacement bar-driver modules are available to cover all the types produced over the years. The design or appearance of the unit may have altered, but the function will remain the same.
Go to id your bar-driver to find it’s id number, then move to spare bar-drivers to locate your replacement module.
